Project Brief
The aim of this project was to develop an understanding of user-centred design through the subject theme of ‘social responsibility’ focusing on user-entered design for people with special needs. I chose to target my product towards plastic sorters and recyclers who want or have no choice but to work in darkness or in unlit areas. This product, the BoomBox, is a large portable LED area light that can provide direct light for users.

The Issue
The primary problem that my product is aiming to solve is the lack and unavailability of electricity in Dharavi, India. I was inspired by this problem as my research made me realise this was one of the largest influential problems that faced the Dhavari slum residents. Providing a lighting solution would relief a large portion of the population and can expand work and employment opportunities. To provide context for the problem, some workers would like to work past certain hours but are unable to due to the lack of lighting. This will force some to resort to kerosene lamps or fire, which is not an effective and entirely practical method of lighting.
